Planning and Sustainability Intern

This role is offered as part of the Clean Leaders Science Horizons Internship program


The Planning & Sustainability Intern will provide support to the Director of Planning and the Sustainability Planner in implementing the Town of Bridgewater’s “Energize Bridgewater,” program, an ambitious new community strategy dedicated to energy efficiency, renewable energy, and capacity building.  Informed by the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan, the Municipal Climate Change Action Plan, and the Community Energy Investment Plan, the Intern will work at the forefront of municipal climate and sustainability efforts. The position will also be involved in several other related Planning Department initiatives.


The Intern’s activities will increase program capacity by providing project management, research, policy development, event planning, communications, and community engagement and consultation.  The successful candidate will have a background in, and aspirations toward, professional planning or community development work, with a demonstrated interested in the environment or sustainability.  As this position will involve complex projects with several active dimensions, they will have strong project management, time management, and communication skills.


  • University degree in Planning, Community Development, or a related field.  The candidate must have at minimum a Bachelors; Masters or higher degree will be considered an asset.
  • Previous experience in a professional planning or community development role will be considered an asset.
  • Work or volunteer experience in community or environmental planning or projects will be considered an asset.
  • Desktop publishing, graphic / website design, and social media campaign experience will be considered an asset.
  • Strong, effective organizational and project management skills.
  • Strong, effective research and analysis skills
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficient with word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and internet browsers.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.


Eligibility Requirements for funding program:

  •  No more than 30 years of age at the start of the internship
  •  Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada
  •  Available to work for at least twelve months
  •  Not currently employed as a paid employee at the host organization
  •  Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations
  •  Not receiving employment insurance during their internship
  •  Unemployed or underemployed


Position Status:12 month term position        

Hours:               Full-time [35 hours per week]    

Wage:                $20.60 per hour

Anticipated start date: Between February 15- March 1, depending on the selected candidate's availability and project timelines.
