Programs and Special Events
The department offers a well-rounded collection of programs for the citizens of Bridgewater. Programs are developed based on needs that have been identified by the public, or specific issues that have become relevant in the community.
The department runs a very strong aquatic program using the internationally recognized programs of the Canadian Red Cross and the Life Saving Society. In addition to regular instruction, the department offers annually water safety instructor courses and national life guard courses to ensure quality trained leadership is available in the community at all times. This is of utmost importance when one is trying to operate a facility, specifically in the summer season.
Many of the programs offered promote an active living philosophy. Programs encompass the arts with dance, arts and crafts, specific youth programs including activity based experiential programs, safety related courses, special fitness and sport courses and courses related to a person’s physical health. In addition, numerous first aid and C.P.R. courses are conducted on a regular basis. These courses have been identified as being required under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The department has been able to provide a service in coordinating these efforts for a corporate community for numerous employers.
Programs also focus on the do-it-yourself model which can look at things that can enhance your home, be it your physical structures or the food preparation for specialty dishes.
The department also coordinates, on behalf of Bridgewater High School, a continuing education program for the adult learners in our community.
It should be noted that all these programs are developed on a cost recovery formula and the programs are only duplicated when demand dictates the need for offering more of the same. An example of this would be numerous swimming programs citing the same number as there is only limited registration in each one of those programs.
