The Planning Department is responsible for the planning and general design of the Town of Bridgewater. Land use planning enables the Town to establish both long and short term goals and objectives for growth and development, while considering social, economic and environmental implications. Through certain planning processes, interests and objectives of individual property owners are balanced with the greater interests and objectives of the Town.

The Planning Department must be contacted prior to the commencement of any development in Bridgewater, be it a residential deck addition or a large development. The Department is located on the first floor of the Town Hall and is operated by three personnel.

The Director of Planning manages the Planning Department, and provides services and advice on matters regarding land use policy, regulation and development. The Director is responsible for carrying out all procedures required by statute for the adoption, amendment and implementation of the Town of Bridgewater's Municipal Planning Strategy, Land Use By-Law, and Subdivision By-Law. The Development Officer is responsible for administering the Town's Land Use By-Law, Subdivision By-Law and Land Leased Community By-Law, and is available to receive Development Permit applications from landowners.  For any questions regarding zoning / permitted uses, subdivision of land, small-scale business uses or signage, please contact the Development Officer directly.

The Planner has been hired for a 30-month term to assist the Director of Planning with the comprehensive Review of the Municipal Planning Strategy, Land Use By-Law, and Subdivision By-Law. The Planner will spend much of his term conducting detailing planning research, policy and regulation development, and consulting the public and stakeholders on a range of local planning matters.  If you have general questions about the Planning Review, please contact the Planner directly.

The Sustainability Planner is responsible for coordinating the implementation of the Town's Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP). The ICSP, which was approved by Town Council in March, 2010, identifies 62 strategic actions (i.e., projects and initiatives) that will help make the Town organization and community more sustainable.
