Job Impact
• Ecological impact & biodiversity preservation: The preservation of Bridgewater’s old growth hemlocks will ensure that the biodiversity of flora and fauna supported by these trees remains within the local ecosystem.
• Climate resilience and adaptation: Along with the rest of the province, Bridgewater is experiencing an increase in extreme weather events due to climate change, including floods and forest fires. The preservation of these hemlock trees protects the ground’s water retention capacity, mitigating the increase in future flood risks. Healthy trees mitigate the effect of forest fires because they are less flammable than dead trees. Maintaining these crucial carbon sinks also enhances the climate resilient capacity of the town.
