Architecture:

• This large, gable roofed, 2 1/2 storey house is somewhat intact in its typical, turn of the century style. Note how the bay windows on the side are recessed beneath the projecting gabled dormer roof. Also note the returned eaves and turned veranda posts. Unfortunately the brackets, dormer and decorative woodwork below the peaks have all been removed.

History:

• This property was originally a part of the adjacent Jacob Crouse properties (see#2 Jubilee Road). Captain Rafuse bought this lot in 1901 and had this house built in 1904 where he lived until 1926. Captain Rafuse sold the property to Jessen Hirtle, an accountant. Captain Rafuse was a well-known master mariner going to sea at the age of 14. His son Stennett once worked at the Blue Rose Tea Room on King Street. Rafuse died in 1933.
