This building was built in circa 1860 and was the location of the first general store in Bridgewater. This building has also housed Robert Dawson and Sons Hardware store, Gow Bros. Ltd. from 1948 to 1960, as well as Cummings’ Fire and Safety from 1979 to 2014, and is now home to Jac’s Burgers and Shakes. The second floor of the building was also a masonic temple. The ceiling of this temple area was hand painted and the original markings still remain intact. Despite the building’s age, the front façade remains remarkably intact, with a gable roof, wide cornerboards, decorative capital mouldings, and deep return eaves. Original windows with hood mouldings can be seen on this property, as well as the original awning framework on the storefront. The buildings foundation is made from cut granite, which was likely locally sourced stone. Source: Built Heritage Files, DesBrisay Museum |
