Veinot Bridge

About the project:

After the bridge was damaged by severe flooding in 2023, the pedestrian crossing was no longer safe to use. In order to allow pedestrians and vehicles to pass through, one lane was closed and temporary traffic lights installed. The temporary solution was put into place while waiting on the Province of Nova Scotia to fully replace the bridge.

[September 10, 2026 Update]

The Town is pleased to share that a temporary pedestrian bridge will be installed at the Veinot Bridge site on King Street. 

As part of this work, the temporary traffic lights will be removed, and King Street will reopen to two-way traffic once installation is complete. 

To allow the work to be carried out safely, the section of road will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians from September 14 to October 2. 

Where will the detour be? 
A detour will be in place for traffic, with cars directed up Victoria Street, across York Street and down Starr Street.

Will the Town bus be affected? 
Yes, the bus will be detouring and stop #4 will be temporarily closed. 

What is happening with school buses?  
The Town is working closely with the South Shore Regional Centre for Education to minimize impacts on students and families. 

What about local businesses?  
The town is coordinating with local businesses to help reduce disruption during this work and provide alternate routes for community members to access their businesses and services.  
 
Why wasn’t a temporary pedestrian bridge installed in 2023?  
Due to the significant cost involved, a temporary pedestrian bridge was not initially feasible. Through a new agreement with the Province of Nova Scotia, this solution can now move forward while plans for the permanent bridge replacement continue. 

Will the bridge still be fully replaced?  
As the bridge is owned by the Province, the timeline and plan for replacement is at their discretion. At this time the Province has advised that the replacement of Veinot Bridge is expected to begin next year.

2026 Pavement Management

The Town of Bridgewater is coordinating Pavement Management improvements, including planing and paving on:

• Aberdeen Road (Chapel Hill Road to Town Boundary) *Complete*
• Nafthal Drive (7 Nafthal Drive to Pinehurst Avenue) *Complete*
• Elm Street (Aberdeen Road to LaHave Street)
• York Street (Empire Street to Dominion Street)
• Marlboro Drive (Dublin Avenue to Beechwood Street) *Complete*
• Alpine Drive (Smith Avenue to Beechwood Street) *Complete*
• Olympiad Avenue (72 Pinecrest Boulevard to Pinecrest Boulevard) *Complete*
• Sunset Drive (Pinecrest Boulevard to 31 Sunset Drive)
• Victoria Road *Complete*

The purpose of the work is to upgrade the condition of the road.

What to Expect:

• Work is tentatively scheduled to begin on Monday, August 31 and is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete. The work is weather dependent. Each street will take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to complete.
• The work will include traffic control. Every effort will be made to minimize the disruption to residents, however you should expect some traffic delays. Dust, noise and heavy equipment are common elements of planing and paving.
• Working hours are generally 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The contractor might choose to work longer hours and weekends to complete the work on schedule.
• Regularly scheduled Solid Waste Collection will continue. Residents are reminded to have items to the curb prior to 8:00 a.m.
