Ryan Cook
![]() |
An award-winning singer/songwriter from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Ryan Cook has been broadcasting his songs and stories to varied audiences of roots, folk, and Country/Western music since 2007. Across Canada and beyond, Ryan has been a breath of fresh air on radio airwaves, blending the nostalgia of classic country with the satire of a modern troubadour. Raised in a large dairy-farming family, Ryan did all he could to outrun the expected clichés of cowboy culture. In fact, he started his music career in punk rock and heavy metal garage bands as a teenager, helping to shape a popular Yarmouth music scene along with artists, Brian Borcherdt (Holy F*ck) and Paul Murphy (Wintersleep). In college, Ryan worked part-time at a retirement home where he began taking requests to play traditional Country music and soon found himself falling for the sounds of Hank Williams, Roger Miller and Tom T. Hall. In 2008, Ryan entered the studio with his then touring band, Sunny Acres, and released the debut LP Hot Times. The record won a Music Nova Scotia Country/Bluegrass Recording of the Year award, was nominated for an East Coast Music Award and named the 8th Best Canadian Country Album of 2008 by Country Music News. In 2009, Ryan was invited to Nashville, TN to record his sophomore album with Music City Roots producer John Walker. The result, Peaks and Valleys, featured some of Nashville's most prolific players past and present including Lloyd Green, Andy Leftwich, and multiple Grammy-winning artist, Alison Brown. The album was hailed by many critics as one of the most refreshing country/western albums of 2010 including Maverick Magazine, Country Music News, Exclaim, Now Toronto, and The Coast. Peaks & Valleys received six nominations in Atlantic Canada from both Music Nova Scotia and the East Coast Music Association. The album took home the Country/Bluegrass Recording of the Year from Music Nova Scotia and received top honours with Country Music News as the 2010 Album of the Year from editor Larry Delaney's year-end review. Above all else, Ryan Cook is an entertainer. Having performed over 600 shows since 2007, Ryan has the natural ability to charm audiences with his offbeat songs and engaging narratives. He has shared the stage with country greats Dwight Yoakam, Rosanne Cash, and Sammy Kershaw as well as celebrated songwriters like Steve Poltz, Brandi Carlile, and Joel Plaskett. In 2011, Ryan accompanied Travis Tritt as the opening act on his 2011 Maritime Acoustic Tour in Canada. Ryan Cook has showcased in Nashville, TN at both Music City Roots and the Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree and performed over 30 theatre shows as Hank Williams in the Maynard Collins play The Show He Never Gave. On the heels of Peaks & Valleys, Ryan is travelling near and far, charming audiences, winning hearts, and subtly converting those who claim to enjoy "any type of music except country". |

Smoke & Mirrors
![]() |
Smoke & Mirrors is made up of four local musicians who are fascinated by the idea of playing a piece of music and then playing with it. That is, they want to try different musical ideas out on a given tune and that is pretty well what jazz is all about. John Bird, a Rhodes Corner resident and "keeper of the book" plays keyboard, clarinet and sax and is perhaps the leader of the group. Gary Sallans from Kempt, North Queens plays excellent guitar with lots of soloing ideas. Robert Clark on bass (both electric and bass fiddle) is also a virtuoso and can solo with the best of them. The drummer is Ian Bolton who is a true percussionist; i.e., he knows when not to play. Together they have played several locations in and around the South Shore from White Point Resort to Staynor's in Halifax. |
